Campbell’s Stores
Historic Campbell’s Stores in Sydney chooses Gentec
Background
Campbell’s Stores are a rare example of mid-nineteenth century warehouse buildings in Sydney. As a memorable and easily recognisable landmark in Sydney’s oldest neighbourhood – The Rocks, visible from a wide area of Sydney Harbour, they have iconic value as a symbol of mid nineteenth-century Sydney.
Today, the historic Campbell’s Stores has evolved into Sydney’s pre-eminent harbourside dining precinct.*
The Brief
As part of the Store’s overall refurbishment plan in 2015, Gentec was commissioned to supply 86 sensor taps with 25-second runtime. The project was needed to be implemented in a phased manner, spanning 12 months in 3 distinct stages.
Being a historical property, it was imperative to maintain the original façade and not to interfere with the original heritage-listed hardwood beam structure. The brief was also to ensure; that, during the refurbishment process the outside walls and floors weren’t touched to route power conduits and water pipes. The design – each toilet is housed in a cubicle – with opaque glass and a high level of finish, while every toilet (including accessible toilet) would have a custom-made washplane with an electronic tap and dispenser.
Customisation was the key: Gentec customised the length of the hose connection so the installers could connect it to the solenoid and power control box. Gentec also supplied extension leads for the power supply, as these had to be located in an access panel underneath the washplane that was getting installed. It was important to ensure that the area was accessible in the future as well for maintenance purposes.
Explaining the complexity of the project, George Joukhadar, CEO, Gentec Australia, said: “To be able to participate in the modernisation of the historic Campbells’ Stores is a matter of immense pride for us and underscores our technical expertise. Due to it’s heritage building status, we had to be careful and customise routine things such as the hose connection so as not to change the integrity of the original structure.”
“We are pleased with the outcome and add yet another milestone to our repertoire of successful projects,” he added.
