What is a Thermostatic Mixing Valve?

Although not the only type of temperature-controlling fixture, TMVs are one of the most common devices to ensure water delivery at a pre-set temperature. The device mixes hot and cold water before releasing it into the outlet or tap.

What Does a Thermostatic Mixing Valve Do?

Thermostatic mixing valves are essentially water heat regulators. They blend hot and cold water to release a ‘safe’ temperature flow for the user. Such temperature control makes them particularly useful in healthcare and educational settings.

Do You Need a Professional TMV Installer in Australia?

Yes, as per the Australian Standards 3500, you require a licensed plumber with a TMV installation licence to install and service thermostatic mixer valves in several Australian states and territories. In the ACT, NSW, NT and QLD, TMV maintenance must be undertaken by an appropriately licensed plumber; this should be assessed before undertaking any testing. Please refer to the Australian Building Code handbook for the latest information.

What Is the Difference Between Thermostatic Mixing Valves and Tempering Valves?

Whilst a TMV valve and tempering valve share similarities, some key differences exist. These include:

TMVs respond more quickly to temperature and pressure changes, and are more accurate and reliable.
TMVs last longer than tempering valves and can be repaired, whereas the latter tend to need replacement when something goes wrong.
You require a licensed and specialist plumber to install a TMV.
