Redland Hospital is a major health centre for Redland City and Brisbane’s southern bayside suburbs, operating 172 overnight beds and treatment spaces. * It started operations in 1987.
In 2014, the hospital announced a $3 million modernisation plan, which involved an upgrade of bathroom facilities and addressing electrical maintenance issues.
The Brief
The hospital previously used a centralised warm water heating system, which was routed through pipes around the hospital building. This meant stagnation of warm water in the pipes until used. This was potentially a trigger for Legionella and other health issues.
The brief entailed decommissioning the existing warm water system and replacing it with point-of-use thermostatic tapware to provide warm water at pre-set temperature – all the while ensuring that the hospital was functional.
Over three years, the installation team had staggered access to the bathrooms. The plumbers dismantled the old bathroom systems and replaced them with several of Gentec’s products. These included Tempset range of point-of-use Thermostatic Shower Mixers, Basin Mixers, Exposed wall-mounted Mixing taps, point-of-use Anti-vandal tapware, anti-ligature Basin sets and Outlets, and Sterisan range of handwash Basins.
The Gentec team ensured that the water temperature supplied was maintained at a constant 50 degrees, whilst still operational using the old warm water system until the new hot water plant was commissioned.
Gentec’s Tempset range of Thermostatic Mixing Valves (TMV) is ideally suited for healthcare projects, as they are point-of-use, single lever progressive mixers, which alleviate stagnant water; minimise the risk of Legionella, and offer stable and safe water even at varying conditions.
Commenting upon the successful completion of the project, George Joukhadar, CEO, Gentec Australia, said: “The Redland Hospital project was technically complex as we had to maintain operational continuity while ensuring project execution in parallel. Healthcare is a vital sector, and our thermostatic taps are the perfect solution as it ensures safe operational temperature, reduces Legionella risk, and ensures user safety.”
